Design and Utilization of a Low-Cost PIV System

This study presents the development of a compact and low-cost Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system tailored for undergraduate-level flow visualization experiments. The system integrates accessible components, including a diode laser, plano-concave cylindrical lens, and a standard imaging device, to observe synthetic jet flows in both air and water media. A loudspeaker and a submersible pump are employed to generate flow fields in air and in water, respectively, and velocity measurements are conducted using PIVlab, a MATLAB-based analysis tool. The proposed setup demonstrates sufficient resolution and reliability for educational and research-oriented laboratory environments, offering a cost-effective alternative to conventional PIV systems.
