According to the reports, bioenergy currently makes up about 10% of the global primary energy supply. The world is facing an energy crisis, which threatens its future. Bioenergy holds significant potential to ensure energy security in the future. It can also aid in climate change mitigation through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The current trend of bioenergy utilization is increasing worldwide attributed to the growing demand for sustainable energy and advancements in bioenergy production. The United States, Brazil, China, and Germany are at the forefront of bioenergy production worldwide. Bioenergy is being utilized globally to generate electricity, heat, and biofuels. The top bioenergy consuming countries are reported to be India, China, the United States, and Brazil. This chapter summarizes the current state of bioenergy worldwide, its production methods, uses, and challenges that need to be overcome to promote its use.
