Many refugees arrive in Cairo experiencing poor mental and physical health, suffering from trauma, loss of community, and socioeconomic instability, all of which worsen their psychological distress. Compounding these already intensely difficult circumstances.Sudanese refugees have sought safety in Cairo for decades, fleeing wars including the Second Sudanese Civil War, the Darfur crisis, and the 2023 conflict. Despite legal and economic hardships, they have built resilient communities and contributed significantly to the city’s culture and economy. This chapter explores the existing support systems and interventions in exile settings, including mental health services provided by the UNHCR, the Egyptian government, international nongovernmental organizations, and community-based organizations. The chapter aims to address these challenges by emphasizing the need for culturally competent health care providers, strengthened mental health infrastructure, and increased community-based initiatives to support integration and resilience. The chapter also discusses the importance of community-based support networks in filling gaps left by formal services and highlights the significance of cultural and contextual considerations in providing effective assistance tailored to the unique experiences of Sudanese refugees living with mental health disorders in Cairo. The chapter concludes with ways to improve future service delivery both within the Cairo context and other urban settings. This exploration emphasizes that understanding and respecting the cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences of refugees is essential for ensuring that interventions are both relevant, accessible, and effective.
