Experimental Study on Ergonomics of Manipulators for Wheelchair Users

This study presents an in-depth analysis and optimization of ergonomic standards for manipulators used by wheelchair users in China. In view of the extensive attention paid to the functional improvement of wheelchairs in China and the relative lack of research on the design of environmental manoeuvres, this study aims to propose scientific standards and recommendations for the installation of manoeuvres through experimental research. Thirty subjects were recruited for the experiment, which simulated daily manipulation tasks covering the three aspects of visible control access control, switches, and sockets, and systematically evaluated the accessibility of the manipulation surfaces at different heights. The results of the study revealed the distribution of reachability levels (comfortably reachable, more effortfully reachable, and effortfully reachable) for operating the various types of controllers. Based on precise measurements and data analyses, optimal design heights and mounting limit heights of wheelchair manipulators were determined to suit the needs of different wheelchair users. The study methodology and results provide practical guidance for the installation, layout design, and improvement assessment of manipulators, as well as a reference for designers aiming to maximize adaptation to the needs of wheelchair users and optimize their ease of operation and quality of life.
