The Impact of Digital Rehabilitation on Treating Functional Constipation in Postmenopausal Women

Functional constipation is a condition in which defecation difficulties are present without any underlying pathological bowel conditions. In women’s life there are cyclic changes which end up in various conditions. Functional constipation is one among them which is caused due to factors like changes in physical activity, dietary intake, psychological state and socioeconomic levels. Post menopausal women get less attention and the condition is rarely addressed. This study was aimed to address the condition. The study consists of 106 postmenopausal women, who have been clinically diagnosed with functional constipation. Study is explained to the participants and consent is obtained then, participants were individually examined and demographic details were collected. Participants were randomized into an experimental and control group with 53 participants in each group. Experimental group participants received 8 sessions of rehabilitation for 8 weeks (1 in person session and 7 digital rehabilitation sessions) which included education on pelvic floor anatomy, exercises, abdominal bowel massage and Control group received educational sessions on dietary and fluid intake advice, toileting techniques and lifestyle education. The Wexner Constipation Scoring System has been used as an outcome measure. Postmenopausal functional constipation reduced after 8 weeks in both groups. Experimental group has reduction of symptoms up to 40.5% whereas control group who has reduction of symptoms around 9.5%. Digital rehabilitation had a significant improvement on treating Functional constipation in postmenopausal women which had benefited with technological advantages and makes follow-up regular.
