Effectiveness of Muscle Energy Technique and Pilates Along with Ultrasound Therapy on Pain, Posture and Flexibility for Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
摘要
The term “Impingement syndrome” is often used to describe various shoulder disorders resulting in anterior shoulder pain, particularly during overhead activities. One reported cause is the pathological tightness of the Pectoralis Minor muscle and thoracic kyphosis, leading to shoulder impingement due to inadequate elevation of the acromion during overhead movements. This study was aimed to compare the effectiveness of muscle energy technique and pilates along with ultrasound therapy in correcting thoracic kyphosis and improving pectoralis minor flexibility for people with shoulder impingement syndrome. About 70 individuals diagnosed with shoulder impingement syndrome, meeting the specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, were recruited. The recruited participants were split evenly into two groups namely muscle energy technique (MET) group with ultrasound therapy (UST) (n = 35) and pilates group with UST (n = 35). Both groups have undergone a treatment program lasting for six weeks and pre and post-test was evaluated by shoulder pain and disability index scale, APECS app and table top test. Pre and post-test values were analysed and results suggested that the pilates group had significant improvement than the muscle energy technique group with p value < 0.0001. This study demonstrates an improvement in both Muscle energy technique and Pilates. However, Pilates exercises show extremely significant improvement than Muscle energy technique.
