Regulatory and Policy Considerations
摘要
Environmental pollution is a concerning topic, since contaminants of diverse chemical nature can be present in air, water, and soil, threatening the balance of ecosystems and the survival of living beings. These pollutants, for being present in places in which they were not expected to be found (in living organisms or outside them), are considered xenobiotics and need to be removed in the most efficient and fast manner possible. However, pollution remediation strategies also need to be sustainable, avoiding worsening the contamination scenario that already exists. Among bio-based, eco-friendly remediation protocols are the ones that aim to promote mycoremediation: using fungi to restore contaminated areas. This promising approach, however, also presents limitations, especially when it comes to human and environmental health. This chapter is dedicated to exploring these limitations and regulatory and policy aspects associated with them.
