The Innovative Theories of Li Zhi and the Gong’an School

Since the mid-Ming Dynasty, the economic factors of capitalism have been developed. Because of contacting with Western countries, the seafaring and handicraft industries in southeast regions were especially well developed, and the urban commoner class expanded increasingly. As the reflection in the field of ideology, there emerged unconventional theory that demanded to get rid of fetter of feudal ethics and rites. Li Zhi, whose theory was developed from the leftists of Wang Yangming’s philosophy, could be regarded as the representative of this ideological trend.
