Yuan Haowen’s Great Work Thirty Poems on Poetry
摘要
This is a major characteristic of ancient Chinese literary theory: some excellent critical essays often become immortal literary classics, and those famous poems written in the form of lyrical verses have been widely recited and passed down through the ages. Du Fu was the first to write Six Playful Quatrains, which pioneered the use of quatrains for poetic critique, and it has been employed by later generations for writing. Generally speaking, these works can be divided into two categories. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Dai Fugu wrote Ten Quatrains on Poetry, which leaned toward expounding theories while Yuan Haowen’s Thirty Poems on Poetry focused on evaluating poets and schools. In general, when using the lyrical poetry form to expound theories, it is often constrained by the form, and when using poetry for reasoning, it often loses the unique charm of lyrical expression. The words cannot fully express the intricate thoughts, hindering the full expression of profound meanings. Therefore, it is difficult for these works to achieve satisfying results. Yuan Haowen’s quatrains on poetry, with their vivid language expressing profound sentiments, are lively in discussion and rich in poetic charm, without sacrificing the strengths of lyrical poetry. As a result, these works have achieved excellent artistic effects. Many successful works of quatrains on poetry in later generations also belong to this category.
