Chinese culture developed very early with complete records from the Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C.–ca. 1046 B.C.). From the Western Zhou Dynasty (367 B.C.–256 B.C.) to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 B.C.–403 B.C.), even a large number of poems were passed down, which were collected into a book entitled Poems (Shi) or Three Hundred Poems (Shi San Bai). This is the first collection of poems and songs which was called The Book of Songs (Shi Jing) by posterity. The Book of Songs contains rich contents, including ancient myths and legends, the epics and historical facts of each ethnic group in the Shang and the Zhou Dynasties as well as the folk customs of various regions at that time. The poets reflected the society from every aspect through poetry. Some poets clearly voiced their feelings and purpose of their poetic creations.
