Anyone familiar with Apple’s history knows the story of how Steve Jobs, wielding his famously persuasive “reality distortion field,” convinced Pepsi executive John Sculley to join Apple as CEO. In his pitch, Jobs delivered the now-legendary line:As is well known, not long after that, Sculley seized the reins and ousted Jobs from Apple. Under Sculley’s leadership, Apple remained profitable for a time; yet perhaps due to being profoundly influenced by Jobs’s vision of “changing the world,” Sculley became increasingly determined to leave his mark through a truly revolutionary high-tech product. Jean-Louis Gassée, former Senior VP of Product Development at Apple, later remarked that Sculley had an overwhelming desire to attach his name to something big.
