Measuring Inequalities via Scaling

City sizeCity size, usually measured by population, is a key factor influencing various aspects of cities, including inequalitiesSpatialinequality and disparities. The traditional focus has mainly been on measuring the scalingScaling of how overall quantities, such as total income or GDP, scale against population size. The importance of how these quantities are distributedDistribution per city and the role of sub-group scaling have received less attention. This chapter uncovers some of these naive scalingScaling relationships and shows how size, scale, and distributions can reveal aspects of inequalities, and how the scaling exponent parameter of a power law distribution can serve as a measure of inequalities in the system. Sections of this chapter are compiled from a collection of previously published papers by the author [1–3], but this chapter also contains some new analysis and the development of an overall argument.
