Beyond GDP

The world is facing unprecedented challenges. Climate change has already caused irreversible impacts on natural systems [1], and planetary warming will, according to some, surpass the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 °C in the 2020s without urgent avoidance action [2]. Biodiversity and the ecosystems that support it are deteriorating worldwide [3]. On top of these—and other—environmental challenges are economic and social challenges of similar scope and concern: growing global conflict [4], mounting levels of private and public debt [5], and declining trust and increasing polarization [6] to name a few.
