How does a bilingual translator translate? In the process of translating, does s/he habitually adopt certain translational norms? If they do, then how do they constrain the process of translating pictorial books? This chapter proposes to address the above questions through the study of Jane Lai’s English version of Hong Kong Government House 1997–2005. Modern translation studies have it that translation is a rewriting of an original text. All rewriting, whatever their intention, reflect a certain ideology and a poetics and as such manipulate literature to function in a given society in a given way. The present study examines how the translator experiments in the course of translating. A detailed analysis of her translations shows how they fluctuate between the everchanging norms of acceptability and adequacy to serve the conflicting interests of two different systems. Finally, the significance of the translator’s experiments is evaluated, and the theory of norms is assessed.
