The Political Economy of the United Arab Emirates
摘要
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has undergone a remarkable transformation from a fledgling nation striving for survival to an assertive regional and global power. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the UAE’s economic transformation and diversification, highlighting its journey from a traditional economy to a modern, innovative, and sustainable one. It begins by looking at the early economic activities centred around subsistence, like fishing and pearl diving, and discusses the profound impact of oil discovery in the late 1950s on the nation's socio-economic structure. The strategic investment of oil revenues in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, coupled with urbanisation, laid the groundwork for a diversified economy. The narrative progresses to examine the post-oil boom developments, emphasising the UAE's efforts towards economic diversification, technological advancements, and sustainability. Key initiatives include UAE Vision 2021, the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, and the UAE Centennial 2071 Strategic Plan, which collectively aim to foster a competitive knowledge economy, reduce reliance on oil, and promote environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the chapter delves into the challenges and prospects, reflecting on the UAE's aspiration for global influence, despite facing economic, political, social, and environmental challenges. It concludes with recommendations for sustaining growth, such as further diversification into innovative sectors, enhancing diplomatic relations, investing in youth, and committing to environmental sustainability.
