This chapter explores the role of universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in promoting and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. Accordingly, our overarching goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the extent and nature of these universities’ involvement in the SDGs, with a particular focus on how these higher education institutions incorporate the SDGs into their educational curricula and research, and engage students and faculty in SDG-related initiatives, as well as focusing on how much impact such involvement has on their commitment to sustainability. To this end, we leverage contents analysis of the websites of a representative sample of public and private universities in the UAE, selected based on a set of pre-defined criteria. A structured coding framework is then developed, to evaluate the contents related to the SDGs, including their presence, prominence, specific activities (e.g., workshops, and campaigns), commitment statements, and the use of multimedia elements, to convey SDG-related information. In our analysis, we also consider links to their external sustainability partners. The results of this chapter highlight the significance of universities’ public-facing sustainability efforts, and their important role in raising awareness about global sustainability challenges among young people. The insights gained from the analysis of UAE universities’ engagement with the SDGs provide meaningful implications for the universities themselves, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in advancing the SDGs in the region. From a broader perspective, this chapter contributes to the general discourse on sustainability in higher education, and supports the collective efforts to fulfil the United Nations’ sustainability agenda.
