Overview of the Development of Cognitive Translation and Interpreting Studies in China over the Past Decade

Cognitive Translation and Interpreting Studies represent a new paradigm in translation research. It advocates integrating the theoretical principles and research methods of cognitive science with translation studies to explore the nature and patterns of translation in depth (Shreve and Angelone 2010; Wang 2012, 2014; Lu and Wang 2013; Wen 2018; Wen and Xiao 2019). The adoption of theories and methods from other disciplines to address translation-specific issues is an inevitable result of the growing interdisciplinarity in academic research. In this context, theories from cognitive linguistics, such as conceptual metaphor theory, conceptual metonymy theory, and construal theory, have provided new avenues for scholarly advancement in translation research (Brdar and Brdar-Szabó 2013; Tan 2012b; Jin and Lin 2015; Hu 2019). The internal driving force of the translation discipline itself, the growing external momentum of cross-cultural communication, and the synergistic effect of cross-disciplinary integration have together fostered the emergence of Cognitive Translation and Interpreting Studies as a new field.
