This chapter draws together the key arguments of the book, discussing the foreign policy consensus, the neoliberal policies of the past from which the administration sought to break, the positioning of the economy to drive America’s security interests, the key legislative achievements and disappointments, and the supply side security policies that were implemented. The chapter examines the warnings made by some in the administration on inequality and precarity in the American political economy, in particular that economic power translated into social and political power, which in turn affected economic outcomes. The noise that accompanied Donald Trump’s return to the presidency left the ambitious policy agenda to fade. The Biden administration had focussed on the electorate’s economic interests, believing the driving force of disaffection was economic dislocation. Trump’s supporters voted on the basis they did not feel better off.
