Nahdlatul Ulama, R20, and the Quest for a Global Peace
摘要
Over the past two decades, scholarly publications have extensively analyzed the “resurgence” of religion in secular public spheres and public policies. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of religion in promoting inclusiveness and global peace. This article seeks to address this gap by examining the G20 Religion Forum or the R20 (Religion Twenty), organized in early November 2022, by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, in collaboration with the World Muslim League (MWL) of Saudi Arabia. The R20 was designed as a high-level forum brought together leaders of the world’s religions, sects, and faiths, including those often considered exclusive, conservative, and discriminatory towards minorities in their respective countries. The forum aimed to foster collective reflection on religious values and teachings, and to produce a shared consensus on how religious beliefs might contribute to, among others, the realization of global peace. By delving into the organization of the R20 event, this article explores how such initiatives enhance our understanding of the relationship between faith and global peace within a post-secular public sphere.
