This chapter analyses China’s reintegration into the international community under Deng Xiaoping. In contrast to Mao Zedong, Deng prioritized pragmatic goals of development and domestic stability, aligning with the Liberal International Order through integration into the world economy as well as strategic engagement with the United States. The shift reflected Deng’s relatively secure domestic legitimacy and his reformist agenda, which allowed China’s foreign policy to be guided more by economic and security concerns than ideological ones.
