Belarus as a Geostrategic Node: A Gateway for the Belt and Road Initiative in the China-Europe Corridor

This chapter explores Belarus’s strategic role within China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), emphasizing its unique position as a critical bridge for China-Europe trade. Located on crucial rail corridors and adjacent to the European Union, Belarus is a vital overland route for Chinese goods, reducing reliance on maritime pathways. The Great Stone Industrial Park (GSIP) near Minsk highlights China’s substantial investments in Belarus, establishing it as a transit hub and a manufacturing centre for Chinese exports to Europe. Belarus has become integral to BRI’s overland logistics network as a primary node on the China-Europe Railway Express. However, Belarus’s role within the BRI is shaped by complex geopolitical realities, including its alignment with Russia, strained EU relations, and membership in the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This chapter presents a structured analysis of four central themes: the BRI framework, Belarus’s geostrategic position, infrastructure investments like GSIP, and the influence of soft power and cultural diplomacy in fortifying Belarus-China ties. Through these lenses, the chapter examines Belarus’s role as a “gateway” to Europe while addressing the challenges of regional dynamics and Western sanctions. Ultimately, the chapter offers a nuanced understanding of Belarus’s evolving position in China’s BRI ambitions, illustrating its dual role as a logistical asset and a contested, yet pivotal, Eurasian partner.
