Examining the Opportunities, Challenges, and Geopolitical Realities in Relations Between Iran and Eastern Europe

Relations between Iran and Eastern Europe are undergoing a dynamic transformation driven by shared interests in energy security, infrastructure development, and geopolitical strategy. Eastern Europe’s position as a gateway between the European Union and Eurasia, combined with Iran’s central role in the Middle East, creates natural synergies. For Eastern Europe, engagement with Iran is consistent with efforts to diversify energy sources, while Iran seeks to circumvent sanctions through Eurasian engagement. With both regions on the move and influencing the changing global order, there are significant opportunities for cooperation. Accordingly, the research question is: What opportunities and challenges arise from the geopolitical circumstances in relations between Iran and Eastern Europe? To answer this question, this study examines the opportunities for relations between Iran and Eastern Europe in the areas of “trade and economic interactions,” “diplomacy and cultural exchange,” “transport corridors and infrastructure development (INSTC),” “energy corridor,” as well as challenges such as “EU and US sanctions” and “security concerns and regional tensions” on the basis of the geopolitical situation. The research suggests that relations between Iran and Eastern Europe require a balance between economic pragmatism and geopolitical prudence to ensure that mutual interests guide future interactions.
