Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: NATO’s Evolving Strategy and Its Impact on Eastern Europe

  • Iskender Karakaya

摘要

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caused the deepest post-Cold War security crisis in Europe, leading to fundamental changes in US and NATO security policies. NATO considerably increased its military presence on its eastern flank, positioning additional troops and defense systems in Eastern European states like Poland and the Baltic States. The United States, for its part, has provided additional military and financial support to NATO allies and drastically enlarged military assistance to Ukraine. These strategic changes have drastically transformed the perception of security in Eastern Europe, with countries in the region placing more emphasis on NATO and US security guarantees, growing defense spending and seeking closer military cooperation. As a result, the Russian invasion profoundly affected US and NATO strategies toward Eastern Europe, resulting in a stronger NATO presence and a more active US role in the region.
