Deploying Open Source Cybersecurity Tools: Best Practices and Case Studies

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly confronted with a complex cybersecurity threat landscape, characterized by rising incidents of ransomware, phishing, and business email compromise. Constrained budgets, limited technical expertise, and a lack of dedicated security personnel make SMEs disproportionately attractive targets for adversaries. This study investigates the deployment of open source cybersecurity tools within SMEs, emphasizing their role as cost effective yet robust alternatives to proprietary solutions. Specifically, identifies and critically analyses essential best practices including endpoint protection, vulnerability management, access control, incident response, and secure data backup framed within the context of open source adoption. To demonstrate applicability, the research incorporates case studies across diverse SME sectors such as healthcare, retail, education, and finance, highlighting unique sectoral challenges and illustrating how tailored practices can enhance resilience. The discussion evaluates implementation feasibility, cost benefit tradeoffs, and organizational readiness, offering a structured roadmap for SMEs. Ultimately, the findings underscore that when strategically deployed, open source solutions empower SMEs to establish layered defenses, reduce exposure to evolving threats, and align with global cybersecurity standards.
