Outdoor Play in Early Childhood Care and Education Setting

The holistic development of young children encompasses cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Play is a fundamental element in meeting these developmental needs, offering children opportunities to explore, experiment, and learn. Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) environments play a crucial role in providing structured programs that may foster children’s cognitive and motor skills; language development; and social and emotional growth. Outdoor play contributes significantly to physical development, sensory learning, and overall well-being. Connection with nature fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence. The incorporation of outdoor play into the early years’ curriculum supports real-world learning, environmental awareness, and scientific exploration. Despite the benefits, there is a concerning trend of reduced outdoor playtime for children. Recognising the equity issue, educators and policymakers must ensure all children have access to nature and play for their holistic development, promoting skills like independence, connection with nature, physical activity, and lifelong habits. Outdoor play offers therapeutic benefits and contributes to cognitive, social, emotional, and cultural understanding, emphasising its essential role in early childhood education. This chapter aims to explain the role and importance of outdoor play in early childhood education.
