The Great Playventure: Exploring Play-Based Learning Through the Journey of Building a School

In 2023, the Year of Play for Lindfield Learning Village (LLV) was officially announced at the progressive K–12 public school in Sydney, Australia. With the goal to reveal the power of play in the transformation of schooling, up to 100 educators devoted the year to embed a culture of play in all elements of the school experience from primary through to secondary school. Across the year, every “villager” was immersed in playful learning, both indoors and out. This was not the beginning of the school’s “playventure”, rather the natural intersection of the mindset that has been explored since opening in 2019. This chapter is written from the perspectives of the Principal and Deputy Principal, drawing on insights from teachers, students, and parents to share the journey to date and discuss the impact of a playful mindset and pedagogies in supporting LLV villagers to develop dispositions for a thriving life.
