Ethical and Legal Dimensions of AI Integration in Forensic Entomology: Privacy, Data Security, and Evidence Interpretation

Forensic entomology is the scientific study of insects associated with decomposing remains to aid legal investigations, particularly in estimating postmortem intervals and reconstructing crime scenes. Insects provide critical biological evidence that their developmental stages, succession patterns, and physiological traits reflect the time and conditions of decomposition. Recent advances in computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have enhanced species identification, developmental stage estimation, and the analysis of complex entomological datasets. Image-based identification, texture and color feature analysis, and deep learning models allow the rapid and accurate classification of necrophagous insects. These computational approaches, combined with traditional field and laboratory studies, have improved the precision and reliability of forensic investigations. Despite these technological advancements, challenges such as data variability, algorithmic bias, legal admissibility, and ethical considerations must be addressed to ensure the responsible and accurate application in forensic casework.
