Agriculture has been integral to human development, intertwining closely with economic progress. Current agricultural practices are based on accumulated knowledge across various agro-climatic conditions. However, the primary sector faces the daunting challenge of increasing food production by 60% over the next 25 years to accommodate a growing population. This challenge is compounded by shrinking arable land, water shortages, and the pervasive threat of climate change. To meet these challenges, the focus must be on enhancing production efficiency, ensuring produce quality, and accelerating market delivery. In the current era of IT revolutions, IoT and AI technologies are essential to revolutionize agriculture by enabling real-time monitoring, precision farming, data-driven decisions, resource optimization, and sustainable practices, ultimately increasing productivity and profitability for farmers. e-Crop is a weatherproof electronic device developed by ICAR-CTCRI to revolutionize farming through real-time data collection and precision agriculture. Equipped with sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, solar radiation, soil moisture, wind speed and direction, rainfall, and geo-coordinates, e-Crop enables farmers to make informed decisions. It calculates daily nutrient (N, P, K) and water requirements, helping to minimize yield gaps and optimize input use. This leads to a 25–50% reduction in fertilizer and water usage, lowering costs and environmental impact. e-Crop supports a wide range of crops, including cassava, sweet potato, elephant foot yam, and banana, and is scalable to others using simulation models. A single device can cover up to 20 km2, making it highly efficient. It improves yield, profitability, and sustainability, offering real-time insights that aid both farm-level management and policy decisions. Overall, e-Crop is a transformative tool for advancing smart and climate-resilient agriculture. Despite concerns about costs and feasibility for small farmers, smart farming offers substantial long-term benefits and has the potential to lead a new agricultural revolution.

摘要
