Extension services play a crucial role in agriculture by acting as a bridge between research institutions, government agencies, and farmers. They are essential for the dissemination of knowledge, technologies, and practices that enhance agricultural productivity, sustainability, and rural development. AI in agricultural extension services can significantly enhance the reach, efficiency, and effectiveness of information dissemination. By enabling timely, continuous, and reliable access to information, it supports better decision-making and optimal use of resources. This chapter introduces “Krishi-Mantrana,” an AI-powered system designed to assist farmers by providing accurate and timely answers to their queries related to agriculture and animal husbandry. The system leverages a comprehensive Question Bank repository covering information on Crop Protection, Fertilizer Management, Water Management, Animal’s Health management, Feed Management, and General management. Farmers can interact with Krishi-Mantrana using voice input, which is processed by an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system, specifically fine-tuned for the agricultural domain. Further, a sophisticated matching algorithm finds contextually similar questions in the repository. The selected answer is then delivered to the user in textual and audio format generated through a Text-to-Speech (TTS) system, ensuring accessibility even for those with limited literacy. Supporting Hindi and Bengali languages, Krishi-Mantrana bridges the language barrier by providing information in local language and empowers farmers to make timely decisions on planting, irrigation, application of fertilizers and pesticides and optimize use of resources. This chapter presents the technical architecture, knowledge repository building mechanism, voice sample collection process, language processing capabilities, evaluation mechanism for components of the system, and real-world impact of Krishi-Mantrana, highlighting its role as a valuable tool in modern agricultural extension services.
