Intelligent Computing Networks

This chapter reviews the evolution and current state of Intelligent Computing Networks (ICNs), a fundamental component for the efficient operation of the digital society. It traces the progression of computing paradigms, from centralized client-server models to distributed systems such as fog and edge computing, highlighting their impact on resource management, service deployment, and scheduling logic. The chapter also examines the role of national strategies, such as the “East Data, West Computing” initiative, in shaping the development of ICNs, enhancing coordination efficiency and resource integration. It presents the three core elements of ICNs: computing power, algorithms, and data, and discusses their increasing interdependence. The chapter also reviews key enabling technologies, including software-defined networking, network function virtualization, containerization, and privacy mechanisms, along with the challenges faced during deployment. The chapter concludes by offering insights into future trends, emphasizing the growing complexity of resource scheduling, the shift toward demand-aware scheduling, and the integration of computing, algorithms, and data. It also addresses challenges related to standardization, security, and coordination.
