Sedation and analgesia are pivotal aspects of pediatric trauma care, essential for alleviating pain, anxiety, and procedural distress in children. While the administration of sedation is typically led by trained emergency physicians or anesthetists, primary care providers (PCPs) are integral to the multidisciplinary team that ensures safe and effective delivery. This chapter provides PCPs with foundational knowledge on the indications, pharmacological options, and monitoring protocols associated with pediatric sedation and analgesia in trauma settings. Recognizing that pediatric patients present unique physiological and psychological challenges, the chapter emphasizes the importance of individualized assessment based on age, developmental stage, and injury severity. A comprehensive review of commonly used sedatives and analgesics, including their indications, dosages, and potential adverse effects, equips PCPs to assist in medication administration and vigilant monitoring. The chapter introduces pre-sedation assessment tools, preparation checklists such as SOAPME, and age-appropriate pain assessment scales (e.g., FLACC, Wong-Baker FACES). Furthermore, PCPs are guided in identifying early signs of sedation-related complications, managing post-sedation care, and communicating effectively with caregivers. Ethical and legal considerations, including informed consent and cultural sensitivity, are discussed to reinforce safe and respectful practice. Through case-based learning, the chapter enhances clinical decision-making, fosters interprofessional coordination, and empowers PCPs to play an informed, proactive role in pediatric trauma sedation scenarios.
