Two parallel pictures come to me when I consider the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), which stretches over Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao. One is the well-polished image of the EEC as a center of industrial efficiency, a trade entry point, and an investment magnet that is displayed in glossy brochures and government initiatives. The other is the reality I have witnessed on the ground, in the streams that bring pollution and life to the sea, in the uneven faces of communities negotiating fast change, and in the air heavy with industrial heat. It is a place where government is a dynamic, contested area rather than an abstract system, shaped by the interaction of environmental vulnerability, economic ambition, and the tenacity of those who live along this corridor.
