This chapter draws on ethnographic fieldwork conducted with women garment workers of two mills in Udyog Vihar region of Delhi NCR, who have been working on contracts from high-end brands like Marks & Spencer, GAP, and Ralph Lauren. One of the major aims of this study is to reflect on the insecurities that surrounded these women workers’ lives, both when they lived in the rural areas and when they migrated to the urban peripheries. Before exploring this dimension, the study will engage with describing ‘insecurity’ theoretically and elaborate on how insecurity is a structural outcome of liberalization. Further, it looks into how these insecurities fuel the rural to urban migration and how these insecurities are reproduced as they migrate from rural to urban within the context of neoliberal policies adopted by India since the 1990s. Through these reflections, this study will examine and understand the discourses that surround women’s physical and emotional labour.

摘要
