Small Screens and Big Screens: The Status Quo of Interlingual Subtitling Practices in the Chinese Mediascape
摘要
This chapter introduces three major forms of interlingual subtitling practices in contemporary China: fansubbing, official subtitling for streaming platforms and cinemas, and subtitling for film festivals. We offer an overview of the mediascape in China and discuss the status quo of both commercial subtitling and Chinese fansubbing, touching on both online distribution (i.e., on-demand streaming) and in-person settings (i.e., cinemas and film festivals). Specifically, we describe key aspects and workflow elements of fansubbing, cinema subtitling, and film festival subtitling in China while also addressing the synergies between professional and nonprofessional subtitlers in the Chinese media localization industry.
