Scheherazade, an Immigrant Dancing Group

I further explore purposefulactionpurposeful actions in the field of serious leisure within cultural associationscultural associations, exemplified on the case of a hobby dance group ScheherazadeScheherazade. Founded in the 1990s by two Russian-speaking women originating from Kazakhstan, the group includes both regular and occasional participants from diverse backgrounds. Their performances reflect a multicultural form of auto-exoticism and exemplify cultural pluralismcultural pluralism as a space of belonging, creativity, and identity formationidentity formation. ScheherazadeScheherazade illustrates how the Soviet legacy of the camaraderie of nations finds continuity in transnational contexts through shared aesthetic forms and cross-cultural collaboration. While registered cultural associationscultural associations are a well-established and well-documented feature of German civil society—with about 6,000 devoted to music, dance, and theater—ScheherazadeScheherazade operates informally, making it part of a more elusive yet vital segment of civic engagement. Such grassroots initiatives, though harder to trace, play a significant role in fostering inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and social cohesion. The chapter argues that immigrantimmigrant-led leisure groups, whether formalized or not, adopt and adapt organizational models to become visible contributors to community life.
