The Mu Us Sandy Land is spread over the northern part of the Ordos Plateau, located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It spans a range of 38–39° north latitude, 107–110° east longitude, and an altitude of 1000–1300 m. Its area is about 35,000km2. The annual precipitation in Wushenzhao, located in the central part of the Mu Us Sandy Land, is 324 mm, and the average annual temperature is 7.2 °C (Fig. 4.1). According to Köppen’s climate classification, the annual precipitation falls below the dry limit, and the average annual temperature falls below 18 °C, so it is classified as a cold steppe climate, and vegetation such as shrubs and herbs adapted to semi-arid environments is established.
