Different soil types, such as sandy or clayey, cause soil degradation in different ways and therefore require different measures. In sandy soils with sparse vegetation, like the Mu Us Sandy Land, wind blows the sand away and creates sand dunes. These dunes can move and sequentially destroy vegetation. If plants can be established on the sand dunes, the windbreak effect will last longer, but introducing plants in locations where the sand is moving is not easy. Therefore, before planting, sand control hedges or checkerboard sand barriers arranged in rows or grids are used to reduce wind velocity and stop sand movement in preparation for the introduction of vegetation. Alternatively, the ground surface is covered with brushwood, plastic, or chemicals in covering work to suppress the generation of shifting sand itself.
