Global Impact of Desertification/Land Degradation
摘要
The globalization of the world economy has created environmental issues that were hardly conceivable 20 years ago. For example, the increased demand for agricultural products in developed countries (such as Japan) is causing deforestation for farmland expansion in developing countries (such as Brazil). This impact of such local activities in remote areas is called telecoupling. Furthermore, telecoupling is not limited to the movement of products between two regions. For example, when corn is exported, the water required to produce it is also considered exported. In telecoupling caused by increased demand in the consumption area, it is difficult to notice the causal relationship between land degradation in remote areas and the imported consumer goods at hand, and people in developed countries hardly think that their activities are causing land degradation in remote areas (Cherlet 2018) (Fig. 11.1).
