Adoption of Green Building Index in Malaysia Construction Industry: The Contractor’s Perception in Achieving Sustainability

摘要

Green Building Index (GBI) is a green building rating tool to facilitate sustainability in Malaysia building construction. Adoption of GBI is closely related with the sustainable development in construction industry including the concrete buildings. This research aims to analyse the contractor’s perception towards the adoption of GBI in Malaysia which extended into investigation on the difficulty level of achieving GBI assessment criteria, determine the barriers of adopting GBI and identify the motivational factors in implementing GBI. Based on the findings, the GBI criteria with highest ranked difficulty level is Thermal Comfort: Controllability of System. It was discovered that there is a statistically significant difference on rating of difficulty level in adopting GBI between respondents who has involved and who has not involved in green building projects. The highest ranked barriers of GBI implementation is Lack of Government Incentives. Besides, the highest ranked motivational factors in GBI implementation is Offer Lower Annual Energy Costs. The results of this research could be a guideline for the government and decision makers in development of regulations and motivational strategies for future development of green and sustainable construction.
