Exploring the Potential of Resin 3D Printed Parts for Rapid and cost-effective Machine Building: A Case Study on the OpenLab Starter Kit Large CNC

Recent advancements in high-performance resins and the growing accessibility of Vat Photopolymerization (Vat 3D printing) technology have expanded the possible applications of resin 3D printing beyond traditional prototyping. This concept paper explores its potential in producing mechanically stressed components for machinery, particularly in contexts where cost-effectiveness and ease of use are paramount. Compared to conventional manufacturing methods such as 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling, resin 3D printing offers significant advantages, including reduced production costs and a lower barrier to entry for users with limited technical training. The study is framed around a case example demonstrating the integration of resin 3D printing into machinery production for small enterprises and start-ups. The discussion highlights the suitability of this technology for Open-Source hardware projects, emphasizing its replicability and practical benefits. These advantages are illustrated through the development of the OpenLab Starter Kit (OLSK) Large CNC, showcasing resin 3D printing as a viable solution for small-scale manufacturing challenges.
