Innovation and AI: The Emerging Role of Industrial Engineers

Artificial intelligence is a game-changing modern technology that can solve complex problems more efficiently and cost-effectively. This paper mainly focuses on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) within the Industrial Engineering (IE) field. While traditionally focused on optimizing manufacturing processes and resource utilization, IE has the potential to evolve and incorporate AI-driven methodologies. The study highlights the IE-based applications of AI in supply chain, predictive maintenance, smart manufacturing, and energy efficiency. AI technologies, including machine learning, digital twins, and augmented reality, are widely used in these fields to enhance decision-making, efficiency, and cost efficiency. The paper also examines the role of industrial engineers as pivotal agents in AI integration. To adapt to the reshaping processes of traditional industries, Industrial Engineers should pay more attention to skills like advanced data analytics, computer science, transdisciplinary collaborations, and integration complexity. This paper also details challenges such as high implementation costs, data security, and workforce adaptation. To reiterate our point, this paper used ChatGPT, a leading large language model as a writing assistant. This tool helped adjust wording and generate content based on given ideas to reduce work and improve the efficiency of writing. Further, ChatGPT also provided ideas about reshaping Industrial Engineering in the new age from the perspective of an AI.
