Uses and Applications of Critical Minerals: Part B
摘要
This chapter highlights how critical minerals are indispensable for driving future innovations in high-performance, renewable energy, and sustainability technologies. The chapter offers a comprehensive analysis of the applications and uses of the remaining critical minerals including silica, lithium, gallium, germanium, platinum group metals, hafnium, vanadium, zirconium, rare earth elements, electrode-grate graphite, and high-purity alumina. Moreover, high-performance polymers are introduced as a new generation of critical materials essential for strategic industries and advanced technologies. The chapter also addresses the pressing challenges related to the sourcing, processing, and supply chain sustainability of these minerals, as many of them are concentrated in geopolitically sensitive regions. The synergy and transformative potential of combining critical minerals with additive manufacturing is accentuated by providing recent case studies and examples from different sectors such as aerospace, biomedical, automotive, and energy storage.
