This study analyses students’ digital competences (DC) in virtual teaching environments, highlighting the relevance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the educational field. Using a cross-sectional quantitative approach, it was examined how university students studying from a distance adopt these digital competences. The findings indicate that they have an advanced level in content creation. However, to develop a highly specialized competence, it is essential to incorporate AI in education. This will strengthen virtual education and better prepare students to face future challenges, highlighting the importance of implementing strategies that foster advanced digital skills and the use of AI in these processes. This finding underlines the need for a considerable effort in the educational field to guide students in handling information in complex contexts, using AI tools.
