In both The Incoherence of the Philosophers and his autobiography, Deliverance from Error, al-Ghazālī stresses the limits of human reason in understanding essential aspects of reality. He holds that many arguments provided by the philosophers to support their views on God and creation are not demonstrative and do not require assent. When it comes to the philosophical disciplines, he makes it clear that while logic and the mathematical sciences should be accepted and studied, metaphysics and physics, as developed by the ancient and the Islamic philosophers such as al-Farabi and Avicenna, should be avoided, since they advance theses that, in al-Ghazālī’s view, are incompatible with the Qurʾān and the Sunna. Al-Ghazālī’s explicit acceptance of philosophy is therefore limited to the mathematical and the logical sciences. Doctrines that are particular to the philosophers, such as the eternity of the world, are not compatible with scripture.

摘要
