Spontaneously Being Recalled Without Intentionally Recalling
摘要
The essence of consciousness, its intentionality, involves a crucial distinction between passive and active intentionality. This distinction lies in whether the consciousness of the self accompanies the fulfillment of this intentionality. In the example presented in Chap. 4 , where one almost stumbles whilst walking lost in thought the state of “lost in thought” involves conscious, self-aware thinking. This leads to an active synthesis in which active intentionality, accompanied by self-awareness, is grounded in a unified and integrated manner. At the same time, the ability to walk without paying particular attention can be attributed to passive synthesis: the passive intentionality of retention and protention, which is grounded without ego-consciousness. This chapter describes in detail how this passive synthesis takes place in sensory fields such as the visual and acoustic fields. Here, passive intentionalities belonging to the same sensory fields mutually awaken each other and form associations that generate chains of pairing. The association occurs as an affective force that draws the attention of the ego.
