Built more than a century ago, the meter gauge Hải Phòng–Hà Nội–Lào Cai railway opened a modern and efficient transport corridor from the international port of Hải Phòng through the mountainous region of the Red River watershed all the way to Kunming, Yunnan China, hence the name, Dian-Việt Railway [Đường sắt Điền–Việt; 滇越铁路]. This railway has served both Vietnam and China well in terms of connecting with each other, connecting each region with the rest of the world, and connecting the frontier region of the respective country with other domestic regions of the country. In the age of China’s Belt Road Initiative of standard gauge, high-speed railway networks that promise to connect the whole of continental Asia, this historical railway line is due for an upgrade. However, the Hải Phòng–Hà Nội–Lào Cai railway is more than just a transport infrastructure; it is a carrier of history and culture, too. This chapter tells of the complex organization, management, and logistics, as well as the sacrifices of the many nameless construction workers behind this monumental project that has connected the hills and plains for more than a hundred years. In doing so, the chapter calls for treating the Dian–Việt Railway as heritage if only just to preserve the historical lessons and the many memories associated with this magnificent transborder railway line.
