Kim Liên Collective Housing Complex: Architectural Heritage from the Collective Living Era
摘要
This chapter asks why the khu tập thể [collective housing complex] from the Subsidy Period has not been properly recognized for its heritage values. From the standpoint of a Hanoian who grew up in one, I see the collective housing complex as the most representative architectural construction designed to help realize urban collective living. As Vietnam transitioned toward a market economy from a centrally planned economy under the Đổi Mới reforms, residents redefined, both figuratively and literally, the living space originally designed for collective living under Socialism. In other words, the collective housing complex stands as a monumental symbol reflecting the golden age of Vietnamese Socialism and the people’s tremendous ability and creativity in overcoming the challenges during the transition period in Hà Nội. However, there are no plans to preserve any of the collective housing complexes. Focusing on Kim Liên Collective Housing Complex, I attempt to make a case for the innovative preservation of what remains of the complex as contemporary architectural heritage. It will be a shame if the precious memories of life in the collective housing complex could only be occasionally showcased in museum exhibitions and stored in our mortal memories.
