Segaran Pool and the Distribution of Important Sites in Trowulan: Archaeological Interpretation and Review
摘要
The Segaran Pool, located within the archaeological site of Trowulan, East Java, is a significant remnant of the Majapahit Kingdom (fourteenth–fifteenth centuries CE). This study explores Segaran’s dual role: its practical functions as a water reservoir and its symbolic significance within the Hindu-Buddhist macrocosmic framework. As a potential central point of Majapahit city, Segaran may have embodied Mount Mahameru, surrounded by important religious and cultural sites, reflecting the Tri Angga/Tri Loka spatial hierarchy. Archaeological evidence, historical records, and cultural interpretations are synthesized to illuminate Segaran’s multifaceted role in Majapahit society. This analysis underscores the need for further studies connecting Segaran with surrounding monuments to deepen understanding of Majapahit’s urban and cultural systems.
