In this chapter, we discuss the physics of refractive index. The topics are electromagnetic wave propagating in vacuum, that in a dielectric material, that in a conductor, Lorentz field, response of a bound electron to oscillating local electric field, refractive index of a dielectric material, and refractive index of a conductor in which electromagnetic wave is absorbed.

In this chapter, we discuss the physics of refractive index.
