Among them, argumental and quasi-argumental topics establish the tightest semantic link by co-referring with a verbal argument (like an agent or a patient) or a “quasi-argument” (like a copular complement) via empty categories or resumptive pronouns. Domain topics, also known as “Chinese-style” topics, establish a broad interpretive framework (time, space, or individual) for the comment without necessarily sharing a direct syntactic link with the verb. Copy topics, termed “Wu-style” topics, involve repeating a constituent from the comment in the topic position to create maximum rhetorical emphasis or a concessive meaning. Clausal topics consist of entire clauses marked as topics that maintain a logical or discourse-level coherence with the subsequent comment. In sum, Chinese topic structures are unified by discourse function rather than pure semantic relations, highlighting the limitations of explaining these constructions through standard syntactic movement.
